When it comes to sewing, having the right cutting tools is absolutely essential—and investing in good quality ones will save you time and frustration.
The golden rule? Choose tools that are sharp, long-lasting, and feel comfortable in your hand. You should be able to open the blades smoothly in one motion—this helps create clean, accurate cuts every time.
While fabric shears may be the first thing that comes to mind, there’s a whole range of cutting tools you’ll want in your sewing kit. Here are some of the must-haves:
✂️ Cutting Shears
These are your go-to tool for slicing through large pieces of fabric. Blade lengths typically range from 20–30 cm (8–12 inches), and they’re ideal for long, smooth cuts.
🔄 Bent-Handled Shears
These have angled handles that allow the blades to lie flat against your cutting surface. They’re perfect for maintaining accuracy when cutting fabric laid flat on a table.
✨ Trimming Scissors
Trimming scissors usually have 10 cm (4-inch) blades and are great for neatening seams and trimming excess threads or fabric.
